The Central Asia Institute, founded by Greg Mortenson (author of "Three Cups of Tea") is a non-profit organization with the mission to promote education and literacy, especially for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. As of 2009, CAI had established 131 schools, educating more than 58,000 students, including 44,000 girls.
