Gordie Rogers's Reviews

"Crush It" was written by Gary Vaynerchuk from TV.WineLibrary.com. in 2009.

It's a book which aims to tell you how to "cash in on your passion". Because I'd heard so much hype about it, I was expecting a lot and therefore felt slightly let down after reading it.

I was expecting some really practical tips, but instead found it to be more of a long pep talk.

That's okay in someways, but I think comparing it to a book like "The 4-Hour Workweek" which had a lot of motivational stuff and a lot of practical tips, "Crush It" only offers you half of what you may be expecting.

It's an easy read and not very long. Use it as a motivational tool rather than practical tool and read it often and you may find it useful.

Seth Godin's blog is very inspirational. Sometimes it doesn't tell you how to go about doing something. Seth leaves that up to you. He motivates you and stimulates your thinking.

This song is awesome and is very clever. The lyrics are rather nonsensical but still powerful and almost haunting. The lyrics were mostly inspired by random bits and pieces from a newspaper.

In the middle and at the end it climaxes in a brilliant amount of orchestral noise and was actually two songs blended into one.

Interestingly, it was refused to be played by the BBC when it first came out.

This classic 70's rock song has it all. It starts of with soft piano music and singing and peaks with an orgasm of guitar and almost operatic style singing. It's being used famously in the movie "Wayne's World" and is extremely difficult to perform live.

Power Principles by Bob Proctor is an audio book and is more suited for newbies in personal development. It covers the basics of what you need to succeed. It covers ten main points over ten lessons:

1. Action
2. Attitude
3. Communication
4. Confidence
5. Creativity
6. Decision
7.Goals
8. Money
9.Persistence
10. Responsibility
11.Risk
12. Success

There were a couple of things I didn't like. Firstly, each lesson came with a corny sounding motivation song sung by some different young singers. While the lyrics were okay, the tunes just seemed hokey.

Secondly, he often says, "You were created" as if it has been proven.

Besides these little things, I think the content is good solid stuff, but is definitely suited to newbies in the study of personal development.

I really enjoyed this book. It's about improving one's productivity. Some of the knowledge is common sense while some was new to me and I think very useful.

The main points were:
*Do your most difficult, least-liked tasks first.
*Keep doing them until finished.
*For larger tasks, break them into small chunks.
*Prioritize your tasks.
*If you can avoid doing a task, avoid doing it.
*Develop a sense of urgency.
*Don't multitask.

It's an easy read and also comes as an audio book.

It's special effects were still better than Terminator 1, 3 and 4. It was a classic sequel that ranks up with great sequels like "Godfather 2" and "The Empire Strikes Back". It also had a great sound track.

I really enjoyed it. I found it had a great balance of inspiration and practical advice. Some of the advice is quite technical and technology reliant. However, if you can even put 20% of his advice into practice you'll be moving forward substantially to improving your lifestyle design.

Recently, a new edition has come out, but it's mostly more inspirational case studies. Tim Ferriss said that you don't need to buy the second updated edition if you already have the first edition.

Romper Stomper is a film about a group of skinheads in Melbourne, Australia. It has become a cult classic. It stars a pre-famous Russel Crowe (from "Gladiator" and "A Beautiful Mind".)

It has some pretty intense violence and sex scenes. It also has some pretty cool sounding Oi music. It is rated R 18.

It's not as preachy as "American History X" but neither is it promoting racism.

It's just a cool, fast-paced movie, only 90 minutes in length. Definitely worth a watch.

Overall, The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing Reviews is a simple and excellent read. Teaches us that there are general marketing rules that can help you get your brand on top and stay on top. However, since the book was written back in the early nineties a few of the examples are out of date. For example they mention that Lotus as being the top spreadsheet software. However, we now know that Excel is now the most popular software. Examples like that and talking about New Coke being around make the book and examples seem a little outdated.
